Radio Evaluation
Throughout the assignment I have played a main part in The Encore Show, I produced and presented the show. I have also helped in the production of Tea and Toast all be it on a much smaller scale than The Encore Show. I feel that during the production of both shows there has been more emphasis on the Tea and Toast show in regards of other people contribution. Because of this I wasn’t able to put a lot of my effort into Tea and Toast as I was producing a lot of work for the Encore Show to make sure everything was completed on time.
I think that both shows went very well but after listening back to the recordings I feel that improvements could have been made.
The Encore Show could be improved by me knowing the script better, at some points I stutter and lose my way; this is very noticeable when listening back to the recording. I also think that the features needed more clear introduction and explanation. I also think that the ‘What is this musical?’ feature would off worked better if it was fully explained at the start of the show and then the clips played throughout the show and the answers revealed at the end of the show, this way it give s the audience a chance to email their answers as throughout the show we didn’t have any emails, I believe this is because of the amount of time given to guess the answers. I also think it would of helped if we played the video over stratcast along with the webcam, this gives the audience a chance to see the video if they are not able to go on face book in such a short space of time.
Tea and Toast could be improved by having the 3 presenters have their own parts in the script instead of having one main presenter and the others adding comments in as it was not clear which one of the girls was presenting. There was a promotional video made by myself for the show, unfortunately due to work load I was unable to finish this video before we recorded the show, I think that we could off used more online content for the show but I believe that everyone has been so involved with the shows that the online content has been slightly overlooked.
For the encore show we chose an older audience to make our show more unique to the others that were submitted for the children in need broadcast, we could of aimed this at a younger audience by using soundbeds, a lively presenter (or two) and more up to date songs from musicals such as legally blond and sweet charity. We think that our show targeted ages 25/30+ and from our audience research we saw that the show appealed to women more than men. After our first rehearsal we got feedback of some of our listeners, the women who work in the zone canteen said that they loved the show and really enjoyed our choice of music and other listeners actually suggested different songs from the musicals we chose. Because of our feedback we decided that for our CIN show we would keep the same format and musicals but change the songs to include some of the requests and to keep the energy up for the live event. In hindsight the rehearsal worked better than the live show because there was not as much energy, the girls Amy and Laura who were dancing for the camera in our first rehearsal did not do the same for our live show, I think that they made the audience laugh and stay listening to the show. Also I think that because of the unfortunate circumstances of the Thursday morning I could have had more energy and could have been a bit happier as when listening back I don’t sound like I’m enjoying the show which I did in the rehearsals. We chose not to use soundbeds so we did not confuse our audience with different sounds from different places; this is similar to Elaine Page’s show, also when looking for suitable soundbeds we could not find many musical related ones that would not confuse the audience as some might think that a song had started. I think that if we used the overture for Chicago for a soundbed however it would not be suitable for every musical and give the show a very different sound as the overture is all brass band music which some people dislike. Also we could not use other musical instrumentals as people who know the musicals well will recognise them and if we did a different soundbed every time to suit the next song in the playlist the audience could become very confused and the shows fluidity would be lost.
In regards to the encore shows playlist we chose songs from musicals that have been previously played on Elaine Page’s show, this way we knew we were covered by the PRS licence, when researching this we found that Elaine didn’t play and songs from Oliver or Grease, because of this we replaced these two songs with ‘don’t rain on my parade’ by the cast off glee and ‘time warp’ also by the cast of glee. However whilst broadcasting the show we found we needed to cut the show down by 5 or so minuets so we chose to take out the time warp as the song had the least rehearsed link. We had to cut our show down as we were asked to put James and Greg’s hairspray feature into our show, our show was the most suitable for the feature and I think it worked well within our schedule. The feature was 8 minuets long so we had to take something out to fit it in. Our other features were 2 musical reviews and 4 clips of our ‘actors’ acting out clips from different musicals. The reviews didn’t work as well as we had hoped and both seemed to be the synopsis of the show. The clips of the actors would have worked better if we had them in our schedule on myriad because our first clip didn’t actually work because Georgie’s Mac (that we were playing the clips from) wasn’t properly connected to the desk. However we did mention the website where we could watch the video’s as I have previously mentioned.
